Goa - Forts
Goa has many historic monuments and landmarks, which one has to see and enjoy apart from beaches and fun loving activities. Most of the forts are situated in North Goa. Some of the forts are: |
Fort of Anjidiv
This is located 8km to the south-west of karwar in Karnataka District. During the Government of the Portuguese Viceroy, a new Fortress was built in 1682 on the island and it was made one of the most pleasant fortifications in India. |

Chapora Fort
The fort of Chapora, is 8 miles to the northwest of Aguada and 25kms from Panaji. Vagator beach is situated at the back of this Fort.
Reis Magos Fort
This fort is Situated on the opposite side of Panaji across the river Mandovi. Reis Magos means the Magi or Kings to whom the place is dedicated. The Fort is constructed during the term of office of Viceroy Don Afonso de Noronha in 1551 and enlarged sunsequently by Don Francisco da Gama. It was finally re-erected in 1704 by Caetano de Mello e Castro, Portuguese Viceroy.
Though the small in size, the fortress commands splendid view around. From here one can see the Aguada Fort, Miramar Beach, and an expanse of sea.
The fort is preserved in good condition and is being utilised as a jail. Towards the east, at a little distance from it, flows a perennial spring, with abundance of portable water, while at its base rises the Church of Reis Magos ascended by a beautiful flight of steps.

Fort of Aguada
This is situated 18kms from the capital city Panaji . The Aguada is an insulated and fortified rock and so call from the great plenty of excellent water which is found here.
The statue of a freedom fighter standing at its entrance, attracts the attention of the visitors. It was erected in memory of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives in the cause of freedom from foreign dominations. Another statue of a lady is also erected in standing posture depicting liberty from the bondage of slavery.
This fort is in the seashore and ascends the summit of the bare and rocky headland called Aquada point which is 260 feet above the sea level. On this point ,there is a citadel or castle with a light house in the form of a circular Tower about 361/2 ft in diameter and 42 feet in height.
The fort houses presently the central jail. Famous Taj Group of Hotels, Fort Aguada Beach Resort is next to this fort. |

Corjuem Fort
This fort is situated 4km north of Pomburpa, along the side of the Mapusa river near the village of Aldona. It was built in 1705 by the Portuguese.

Terekhol Fort
This is situated on the northern frontier of Bardez, on the left bank of the Bardez River. This fortress was erected in 1681 by the court of Alvor as a barrier against the Marathas and Bhonsles.
